What I do

Welcome to Wessex

Mark Thomas, Blue Badge Tourist Guide

What I do

I will be pleased to offer any of the following services; usually combining more than one of them.

  • Area and en-route commentary on panoramic coach journeys
  • Guided introduction and tours of sites your group wants to visit
  • Walking tours
  • Organisation of one-day or part-day excursions for groups
  • Talks on sites and areas; background history and context
  • ’Meet and greet’ of parties in transit to and from the area

Here is more detail of each of these services:

  • Area and en-route commentary on panoramic coach journeys
  • You organise the coach, the driver and the people who are on it; or I can do this as an additional service (see below). All I need is a brief of where you want to go, and any specific elements you’d like to include or avoid.
  • I can offer advice on what routes, itineraries and other details should work best.

  • Guided introduction and tours of sites your group wants to visit
  • e.g. cathedrals, museums, galleries, historic ruins:
  • You organise the admissions and timings, or I can do this as an additional service (see below). I can offer advice and negotiate with the site on the details if you wish
  • A few sites restrict guiding within a building itself, and in these cases I can give you background, and hints of what to look for when you get inside....
  • Walking tours
  • This is usually the best way to explore our wonderful cities and towns. A tour can be themed, e.g. maritime in Southampton or Portsmouth, or maybe about power, religion and learning in Winchester, Oxford, Salisbury, Portsmouth, Southampton...

  • Organisation of one-day or part-day excursions for groups
  • I can set up many of the elements needed to make your day out a success, usually combining some or all of the above. This can include themed tours, e.g. around literary figures, art and sculpture, history, religion, maritime.. I can negotiate the detail with transport and site access, but you will have to sign and pay for the orders, unless it is for a small group.

  • Talks on sites and areas; background history and context
  • No time to visit? Want to look ahead on those dark winter evenings? I can prepare a talk on a variety of aspects of Wessex, whether its history, its buildings, landscape, its famous people..... Maybe you are a specialist society who would like some more generalised context to the subject that brings you together.

  • ’Meet and greet’ of parties in transit to and from the area
  • A tour or visit in my area might be part of a journey as you enter or leave England. I will be pleased to help show your party the way through those parts of the unfamiliar terminal airport or port that I am allowed to access, and to find the transport for the next step of their journey. Where necessary I can liaise with the private transport operator which you have arranged for your party.

  • .....and just a word about what I don’t do:
  • offer expert guiding commentary about any part of the route which is outside the area for which I am qualified; however I may offer some information generic to England as a whole.
  • assist your party with lifting, carrying or other manhandliing of baggage
  • make supplementary travel arrangements
  • organise airport transfer transport for your party
  • Languages
  • I guide in English, my mother tongue. I am only qualified to guide in English, and do not offer guiding in other languages.
  • I have some knowledge (approximately of 'intermediate' level) in German, French and Danish, which I believe can help to achieve a more satisfactory experience with working through an interperter/translator.
